PCR Bike Tour Day 13 of 39 Carpinteria SP to Gaviota SB. Santa Barbra, UCSB, No breakage

Heading north today with best weather so far. Best news, no spokes breaking today! I looked for bicycle shop half heartedly in Santa Barbara without success. Those additional spokes will have to wait. Hopefully my wheel and I are on the same page now.

I was able to take the Santa Claus Ln. detour.
Interesting building somewhere before Santa Barbara
Again today, I had very nice pathways to ride. There were lots of other bicyclists out around the Santa Barbara area.

I was chatting with two nice ladies about my tour and this sign was next to me. I gave them one of my cards so maybe they will read this.

I had to ride the freeway again (highway 101). It was fine with wide shoulders and no issues at all.

Gaviota state park where I’m staying is full along with all the campgrounds and hotels in the area due to memorial weekend. There are three other bike tourers staying here crammed in one site spot. Nobody’s complaining though because we’re just glad we have a spot. The other tours are heading south and I’m the only one heading north. I asked for a tip from one of the southbound riders on where he stayed last night. I didn’t find anything good within a reasonable distance and the hotels start at $300 for a motel 6. He stayed at a fire house that allows bike campers. I emailed them and already got a response. So I have a place to stay tomorrow night as well.

Extremely heavy winds are due tonight here at the campsite so I broke out the tiedowns for the first time and double secured the tent. It’s already pretty windy so I hope the extra ropes will be good enough.

Lots of hill climbing and headwinds expected tomorrow but at least I have a place to stay.

Ride summary: 5/10 difficulty, 52.5 miles with 1850 feet climbing. Mostly clear with some clouds and lower 80 degrees. Medium to heavy cross and headwinds but not too difficult. Today’s ride detailed GPS.

  1. Yeah, for no bike problems today! Praying your tent doesn’t blow away at least with you in it. 😂

  2. That is a lot of bicycles in one space. It reminded me of that house many years ago, off of 99th street between Hazel Dell Avenue and HWY 99. The one that had bicycles stacked on top of each other in the yard over the top of the 6 foot fence. Anyway, it is nice that you have such large and prepared paths for you to ride on.

The Jesus sticker is hilarious; a little over the top with puns though.

    • I remember that house now that you mentioned it. These appeared all functional bikes it looks like it highly promoted for the students to ride. Whole campus was marked with paths. Huge campus too.
