Day 34 – Bicycle Touring Honeyman SP to Waldport. Florence, Heceta head, Cape Perpetua

Day 34 – Bicycle Touring Honeyman SP to Waldport. Florence, Heceta head, Cape Perpetua

The rain lightly fell throughout the night and soaked the tent but the contents and myself stayed dry. But like the other day, by the time my ride started, it was partly sunny and nice.

I said my goodbyes to my camp mates and wished them a good trans America crossing. I gave them one of my contact cards in case they would like to follow and exchange stories.

I took the time to explore the Honeyman day use area and lake. A little while further, I took a hilly side road to look at a dune off-road vehicle area.

After making it to Florence, my ride slowed further. I had to stop to capture images of the bridge and river front. I had good data access here, so I worked on updating the blog from yesterday’s ride. Still needing a proper breakfast, I found an open and popular cafe. I ordered a meal of pancakes, omelette and potatoes. First time on tour I wasn’t able to finish everything served. I guess only riding 8 miles so far, didn’t build up my appetite enough. Next thing I know, it’s 11:30 and I’ve barely gained any distance. I’d better get moving.

Once I made my way back to the beach, I believe I saw the clearest visibility of the whole tour. This on a day I thought I would be riding in the rain.

I checked the clock and I’m due to meet up with my old high school & soccer mate in Yachats in 1 hour. I try to text to let him know I would be late, but no signal. I better pick up the pace more, but so many hills and so many attractions.

Meet up with Kevin at Yachats to ride into Waldport

I met up with Kevin and his wife Stef in Yachats, only a “little” late. After a quick picture we set off together the last 8 miles of the day. We rode and chatted, catching up just a little from the last 36 years.

Kevin and Stef graciously hosted myself with tent drying, warm shower, laundry access, prepared spaghetti and salad dinner (the best!) and a warm bed. We talked and caught up just a bit more on family and friends. Thanks Kevin and Stef for sharing and being gracious hosts.

The weather forecasts are looking great. It may be possible to finish the tour without any more rain. I’m too tired now to figure out the ride for tomorrow, I will deal with that in the morning.

Ride summary: 4/10 difficulty, 43 miles with 2365 feet of climbing. Woke to rain, but at start of ride it was partly sunny the whole day with nice riding weather and temperature. Calm and some medium headwinds had some impact on effort. Today’s ride detailed GPS. Tour totals: 1654 miles (49 / day). 94,730 climbing feet.
