Day 25 – Bicycle Touring Manchester SP to Mackerricher SP. Rolling hills, Mendocino and Fort Bragg

Day 25 – Bicycle Touring Manchester SP to Mackerricher SP. Rolling hills, Mendocino and Fort Bragg

It was warm enough in the tent last night but in the morning the outer surface and some of the inner of the tent was soaking wet with the humid ocean air. It wasn’t from rain it was just in the air. The sun was already out and warm. So I took my time and separated the tent and rain fly to dry out before packing.

Today will be an average mileage day but the headwinds are already picking up. They intensify at times, increasing the efforts required, but never reaching demoralizing level.

Early in the ride, it was great riding scenery, but at the same time not standing out as great photo opportunity. So I stuck with mostly recording videos. The second half of the ride went back to full crazy and exceptional scenery.

The majority of the ride has views like this. Nice to ride through but not necessarily photogenic.

This segment is packed with rolling hills. It never exceeded 325 feet in elevation and yet I still achieved over 3000 feet of climbing.

I once again, I saw many southbound riders. At the city of Elk, I met a southbound rider, Obie who is traveling from Newburg, OR to San Diego. We were stopped at a market and I was planning to get second breakfast. However, the store didn’t open till 11 and it was only 10:15. Food will have to wait.

I went down this hill and it was actually steeper than it looks with double digit negative grades and hairpin turns. This is one hill where the southbound travelers have it worse.
There’s still plenty of amazing views.

Still lots of climbing today

I scared another buck today 10 feet off the side of me. I also saw several other groups again.

I know it’s crazy, view after view after view.

When I made it to Fort Bragg I was finally able to get a late lunch. I went down to the oceanside park where I could get a data signal and work on uploading my blog from the previous day. While I was working on it, a gentleman approached me and was interested in my adventures. We chatted for a while and I gave him one of my contact cards.

This is where I worked on uploading my blog from the previous day. Not a bad office spot.

Arriving at Mackerricher SP via the back way is a little confusing finding the registration booth. They also have three different campground areas. After some searching, I found it and was able to check in. At first, I was the only one at the hiker /Biker site, but after an hour, someone else arrived. His name was Brian and he is doing a trial ride getting ready for a big Asia tour in December.

Tomorrow will be a big climbing day as I head inland and up into the mountains. After a few days I will return back to the coast again.

Ride summary: 4/10 difficulty, 48 miles with 3099 feet climbing. Was clear skies and warm most of the day. Winds started as mild headwinds then became medium headwinds which caused a little more effort. Today’s ride detailed GPS. Tour totals: 1187 miles (47 / day). 68,325 climbing feet.

  1. I could never get tired of looking at the coastline, most amazing! Mark and I need to rent a convertible and travel Hwy 1, as long as it’s not raining.

  2. I love the ocean coast; so much to admire looking out over long distant views.

I think the GPS link is incorrect on this post.
