PCR Bike Tour Day 9 of 39 Carlsbad to Doheny SP at Dana Point. Rush, fix wheel, late afternoon ride

This morning was a rush to finish the blog post from yesterday‘s ride so that I don’t fall behind. I still had to fix my bike wheel and sort through my gear before we had to check out of the motel at 11 am. It was all hectic and certainly not a restful day. But we were able to accomplish enough so that i could squeeze in a late afternoon ride north. It was helpful that last evening, I did laundry and buy a couple of wrist braces to help my sore wrists. The braces seemed to help, but it could’ve been because of a shorter ride. But I’ll keep wearing them and hopefully my wrist will get better.

This is the culprit, a broken spoke. I’ve gone tens of thousands of miles and have never broken a spoke. I hope it was just a defective single spoke.
With my make shift workstand and tools I brought along in the car I was able to replace the spoke. However the spares spoke I brought was a little short. But I made it work the best I could.
A quick ride to a nearby park revealed some fine-tuning was still needed. My wife was kind enough to hang around for the adjustments and until I was on the road with some miles behind me. Fortunately everything seems to be working. When something breaks, you have to rebuild confidence in your machine again.
I had the leftovers from Angelo’s burgers from last evening’s meal for lunch today. It was still great.
A pleasant ride along the Oceanside city boardwalk and view of the pier.
At this point I had a problem with my route. It goes through the Pendleton military base. I talked to one of the guards. He said it was not uncommon and was possible if the visitors center issued me a pass. I would have gotten a pass except they require an enhanced drivers license ID or a passport. I had neither. There were only two remaining options. One; go on a long detour in land or two take the freeway.
I opted to take my bike on the freeway.
I have ridden on freeways before, and as far as Freeways go, this is relatively easy. There are no on or off ramps to navigate other than one rest area. The shoulders are huge and even separated in some areas. It seems quite a few bikers take this route as I saw two others in route.
I had to take advantage of the freeway rest area since I don’t get that opportunity very often.
After the rest area, bikes must exit the next offramp at Las Pulgas road
Still on the military base but no pass required in the north area (as far as I could tell).
At one point I stopped and took some pictures. I don’t know if it was just coincidence or if I’m not supposed to do that. A military helicopter circled me three times. This was my signal to keep moving.
New pathway along the ocean at Dana Point.
Dana Point statues and footbridge.
My camp for the night. The camp hosts were gracious to find a spot for me.

Ride summary: 3/10 difficulty, 32 miles with 1000 feet climbing. Windy, but not too bad and overcast with cooler temperatures.

  1. Lot’s of chaos and things to see in the next several miles. Should be quite an experience. Freeway riding seems a little sketchy; I’m glad all things went well.
