While packing up and eating breakfast at Pico Picacho campground, a campground official came over and warned me that I wasn’t supposed to be camping there. I explained that it was allowed and I had a permit. He was surprise but was okay when I showed him the paperwork. Apparently the hiker / biker option at this campsite isn’t well-known even by people that work there.
We chatted a bit more about touring and other miscellaneous topics. Before leaving he cautioned me about the road being busy and people racing on it.
Today I left the mountains that I’ve been in the last week and went down to sea level. In the process I saw some amazing and interesting landscapes, animals and people. I reached the Mexico US border and then got a peek at the Pacific Ocean.
I reached my destination at Tijuana River County Park. While visiting the border park and wall along the ocean, I spotted another coyote (no picture this time).
At camp, a couple introduced themselves. They invited me over for dinner and offered me a drink. We talked about touring, bicycling and camping. Thanks to Tye and Dee Dee they boosted my calorie intake and had a good conversation. I really appreciated it.
Overall it was an amazing day and ride.
This last week in the mountains has been challenging. The climbing, hot weather and the cold weather. It was a rural and more isolated experience. Very few services forced the requirement to plan for water and food.
I now am at the furthest point south I will turn and head north, up the Pacific coast. Although there will be some climbing nothing even close to what I already experienced this first week. But with that new challenge, the wind. The wind is almost always blowing hard on the coast. Wind can be just as brutal as a steep hill. Here’s hoping for tailwinds. Now my journey transitions to urban riding for a while.
Todays summary is: 6/10 difficulty, 66 miles with 7300 feet downhill and only 2400 feet climbing. in total 270 miles and over 20,000 feet climbing

That was a long ride today. Mostly downhill, but still very long. Those sandwiches looked much better than the last one. That border wall looks odd and confusing. Maybe you’ll get some tail winds to help you on your northbound way.
They were really good, or I was really hungry. Probably a little of both. The dips and valleys even on down hills really add up. There were a few 2 mile plus climbs!
Glad you made it to your farthest point south. What a feat you have already completed, congratulation! You’re getting a little scruffy looking there DJ. 😆
Thanks and yes, and very scruffy.
